I wanted to believe that I had finally put my family first. I hadn’t gone along with Pratt and Rob’s plan. Sure, my plan was a gamble too, but at least it prioritized getting my family to safety. I wanted to believe that, but if I had wanted to make absolutely sure that my family was safe, shouldn’t I have just done what Westfield wanted? Or could I rationalize that he wouldn’t honor his deal and I was doing what was best for them? How could I make Suzanne believe I was completely and unreservedly committed to her when I couldn’t convince myself? Nachash was strangely silent about it all.
When I heard the door open, I almost expected him to materialize in the steam and announce his return. But it was Mimi who slid into the shower next to me. She launched her usual sneak attack. I was an easy target.
